I’ve been dyeing fabrics to use in my art for 15 years now, my blog chronicles my work. I’ve begun developing online classes to help people learn how to dye using Procion MX fiber reactive dyes. Each class is self-paced, with no end date on your access to the information. I use a combination of written worksheets, templates, step-by-step directions with lots of pictures, and videos of steps that could be tricky. I make a .PDF of each session that you can download for saving on your computer (and printing if you so desire). These classes are packed with details! In Dyeing 100 , my simple beginner’s class, there are 3 hour s of video, 38 pages of PDFs plus printable formula worksheets in several formats! In Dyeing 101 , there are 5 hours of video, 90 pages in the .PDF files plus 2 multi-page spreadsheets to use in calculating dye amounts and a worksheet for each session. Dyeing 102 has 10 hour s of video, 130 pages of PDFs along with session worksheets and 2 spreadsheets! Dyeing 103 has 11 hours s of video, 134 pages of PDFs along with a spreadsheet for each color relationship! Dyeing 104 over 12 hours of video and 184 pages of downloadable PDF’s , along with a 11 helpful excel spreadsheets. Each session has a Question and Answer forum associated with it – I will respond to any question you have within 24 hours, and both these questions and answers will be available for other registered students to view. The beauty of an online course is that if several people are having the same difficulty with a particular step, I will just create additional content to add to the session to clarify any confusion. I am very comfortable engaging my students and putting complex ideas into terms they understand. Incorporation of videos makes a huge difference in clarifying processes, such as the way you scrunch your fabric. It will be great when students start putting their fabrics on the gallery. I think there’s always a lot of learning from fellow students. I also appreciate how quickly you’ve responded to comments. So far this class has worked really well for me. OK, I haven’t actually done any of the dyeing yet, but the instructions are clear, the videos are very helpful and I love the separate checklists and formulas. Also, I like being able to click on separate topics and go right to them, rather than having to look through the whole lesson to clarify something. Seriously, this is the best online class I have taken. You are computer savvy and you know dyeing–a match made in heaven. (P.S. I am a functional analyst and help non techies in the Justice department figure out what their program needs are, so I KNOW what good documentation should look like.) This is the most well thought out online class that I have taken!!! …I did glean plenty of information to be able to tweak / adjust the way that I have come to dye fabric over the years. I must admit that initially I was skeptical and a bit arrogant – I knew what I was doing. After all, I’ve been dyeing fabric for almost 20 years. Now I most humbly admit that I was wrong. Your system of (edit: a technique in the class) blew me away. It made me realize that I’ve wasted a lot of dye over the years, in the sense that I was using too much dye powder initially. … Candy, you are doing the proper teaching “thing”, having everything shown, told and written. One or the other method should get through to everyone. I was so amazed with getting so many colors from 3 basic primaries. I feel like Candy has revealed the Secrets to Life, the Universe, and Everything to me! This class was so worth it! Thank you, Candy! Completed and hoping to start 102 anyday! I have been working on an 18 step gradation of tints using the calculations that I made with the New Candiotic Table Calculator. And my results are phenomenal. I am so happy! I have quite a bit of experience in shibori and printing with thickened dyes, but am tired of my sloppy outcomes in color. I like the tone of your presentations. Everything seems very achievable.
